From a Medical Transcriptionist to Audit Executive

When I embarked on a new journey last year, I was quite uncertain as to where & what I will end up, but my restless spirit wouldn't let me settle down in my MT avatar, so  with backing of my sister and mom, I took the plunge.

I have jotted a few points regarding my experience in the new sector.

1.  New job, new skill set, new orgn, new culture: To move from a desk job to one which require lot of travel is something quite mind boggling.  Keyboard skills from previous job came in handy while preparing reports on MS Excel and Word.  The organisation culture is hardest nut to crack & takes some time to sink in like for eg calling guys senior to you by adding suffix sir, even though they may be younger in age.  The working style of a large organisation is also entirely different with each executive reporting to someone above him, who in turn reports to someone above him........so for anything which needs coordination of 2 different departments, you can imagine the time it takes.

2.  Salary/pay:  The best part of this was that you get paid in the last day of the month, you also get pay slip which helps if you are planning taking loan.

3.  Travel:  Audit requires lot of travel.  Once you settle down in the routine, it is fun, visiting new places, getting to know different people, making new friends and acquaintances.  Company provides guest house at most places with kitchen and all accessories, so needless to say you can cook and eat whatever you like.

4.  Seniority has got weight:  Unlike in BPO sectors, here each year that you worked for the organisation counts.  You may find the going quite difficult in the start, but if you get used to the system, you can find you way. Your incentive, bonus everything is calculated based upon your seniority in the organisation, so it pays to stay with the group.

FOR THOSE WHO CAME IN LATE:  DEEKAY WAS A MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST (MT) WHO AFTER WORKING FOR 7 YEARS IN HEALTHCARE BPO SECTOR, CHANGED CAREER, AND MOVED INTO A NEW AND ENTIRELY UNRELATED SECTOR.  DEEKAY REGARDS THIS MOVE AS THE BEST DECISION HE HAS EVER TAKEN.  ALTHOUGH HE HAS NOW LEFT BOTH THIS JOB AND HIS BELOVED DELHI FOR PURSUING NRI DREAMS, STILL HE CONSIDERS THIS 1 YEAR AND 3 MONTHS AS ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF HIS LIFE.

On completing a year

Somewhere down the horizon,
Somewhere along the line,
We tend to draw a boundary,
Beyond which we seldom try!

I started my working career as a business transcriptionist, then moved on to medical transcription, where I worked for 7 long years.  These 7 years were the period when I made most of my friends, learnt a thing or two about life and also in the meantime became a good transcriber.  But the growing feeling of monotony associated with the job along with the stagnation of pay and challenges offered eventually drove me out and  I changed job and moved into a new yet unrelated sector.

Now after completing 1 year in this new organization and sector, I think it is time for a short question and answer session on the  journey so far.

1.        Was it a wise move (working in 1 sector for 7 years and then moving into another unrelated sector)?      Emotionally it was a great move, although logically and economically, it may take another couple of years for its impact to really sink in.

2.       Many of us feel this urge to quit and move to somewhere else, do something which we are passionate about, is it viable?   Well that depends on quite a few variables, like one’s financial condition,  the depth of passion one has, the type of person one is etc.  For example, if you are married and have a family to look after, a jump from a settled career to a new uncharted one may come as a rude jolt and a failure on this new venture can have a cascading effect on your life.

3.       Are you really happy now, after achieving what you had been dreaming for quite some time?  Yes, but this is just one small step, there is much more to come.

Thank you MT field and friends  for molding me and setting the tone for things to come…………….cheerz!

The D mobile

D was crying.  Why? Because her mobile was missing!  It was not that it was the latest gizmo or a much sought after model, but it was something very close to her heart, a birthday gift from her parents.  Knowing how careless D can be, the whole office, starting from the BM to the office boy got into the act.  R the office boy did not even leave queer places like fridge, photocopy machine as he was well acquainted with the ways of D.  At last everybody gave up and zeroed in on the security camera.  The crew assembled in the BM cabin and rewind was started of the recorded video.  D was last seen checking an SMS at lunch which was at 2-2:30 pm and she reported her mobile missing at around 4 pm.  So that narrowed the time slot to be checked.  It was quite dull and boring to view the recorded video.  It dawned on us that playing Sherlock Holmes wasn’t after all as glamorous and interesting as it looked on print and the screen.  More ever the footage wasn’t that much clear.

One big plus was that D’s phone was still ringing somewhere (albeit in silent mode), so obviously no one stole it.  I had mentioned this bright point earlier in order to slow the slew of tears, but was told “Shubh shubh bole” by D.

Finally, by looking at footages, it was concluded that D had used mobile last at 3:05 pm and had gone to ladies room and placed it in a bag there.  One more time, D’s bag was checked.  After that, other bags lying there were also checked as they were all huddled together in a small rack.  Meanwhile R our office boy called D’s number and was surprised to get his called picked up and what he heard was all the more surprising! It was D’s voice and also G’s voice, who was main investigator in this episode.  Both G and D were checking N’s bag at that point.  Eventually, D’s mobile was found in N’s bag.  It seemed, G had inadvertently pressed call receive button of D’s mobile lying somewhere in N’s bag.  N fumed at D for irresponsibly placing her mobile there.  Although all of us were relieved after finding the lost mobile, can you guess what did D do?

She was found in the wash room, crying, being consoled by one of her colleagues…..Afterwards I learnt that D was hurt by the tone of N’s reprimand.  Mobile lost or found, tears continued…unabated!!
